Chapter 1 Summary In John Boyne’s historical novel The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, the young protagonist Bruno faces the problem of moving from his hometown of Berlin, Germany due to his father’s job. Although Bruno can’t identify the precise job his father has, he knows that the important work he does for “the Fury”requireshim to wear a “fantastic uniform.” After initially assuming that he was being sent away as punishment for some unknown crime, Bruno learns that his whole family is being forced to move, regrettably including his sister Gretel, and that his mother doesn’t seem to like the idea any better than he does. Bruno’s biggest concern is leaving his “three best friends for life (8)” Karl and Daniel and Martin, but his mother assures him that he will make new friends where he is going, and in fact, the family, who must turn out the lights every night in Berlin may be safer where they are going. Bruno considers the move with trepidation, but decides to supervise the maid’s packing and see what happens.

The consequence “You will finish polishing all the glasses,” said Lt. Kotler in a very quiet voice now, so quiet that Bruno almost couldn’t hear him. It was if all his anger had just turned into something else. Not quite the opposite, but something unexpected and dreadful. “And then I will come to collect you and bring you back to camp, where we will have a discussion about what happens to boys who steal. This is understood, yes?”
At what point does Bruno understand the evil reality of Auschwitz?
