  2. What do animals need? Water Food Air Shelter

  3. All animals are made up of mostly water. Humans are about 60 % water. That’s over half of us! Water

  4. Shelter Animals live in places that allow them to meet their needs. A SHELTER is a place or object that protects an animal.

  5. Kangaroo Rat Kangaroo rats live in the desert, where it is very hot in the day time and cool at night. Therefore, they sleep in holes during the day and search for food at night.

  6. Bats Bats live in caves during the day and hunt food at night.

  7. Food Food is very important because it gives animals energy. ENERGY is the ability to do work. Animals cannot make their own food. Therefore, they are called CONSUMERS.

  8. How do animals get their food? Some animals get their food only from plants. Koala bears mainly eat leaves from trees.

  9. Herbivores Animals that eat only plants are called HERBIVORES.

  10. Carnivores Some animals eat only meat. Therefore they mostly feed off of other animals. They are called CARNIVORES. This cheetah is feeding off of another animal.

  11. Omnivores OMNIVORES are animals that eat both plants and other animals. Raccoons are omnivores. They have a diet of crayfish, frogs, small fish and turtles. They also eat wild berries, and corn.

  12. How do animals get air? Animals need air because oxygen allows them to get the energy they need from the foods they eat. Animals could go days without food water, but without oxygen, they would die in a few minutes.

  13. Lungs Land animals breathe with their lungs just like we do. They get their oxygen from the air. Some animals that live in the water also have lungs, such as dolphins and whales. They swim to the surface to breathe.

  14. Gills Many fish and other water animals breathe oxygen from the water with gills.
