The Need 10,594 households were in temp accommodation, including 4,884 children
Bethany’s Response Passing the baton “befriending those who are at risk of homelessness, giving a hope and a future”
In 2012/13 • Passing the Baton provided 4,692 hours of support to 55 individuals • 100% positive move-on rate • PtBOP Edinburgh provided 272 hours of support to 14 older people.
A Passing the Baton aim is that … People’s lives are transformed Communities revitalised Homelessness Eradicated The Gospel demonstrated
What can happen…. • Increasedfriendships and sense of purpose and motivation. • Achievedshort & long term goals. • Increasedstability within tenancy. • Increasedability to contribute back into their community. • Reduced risk of repeated family breakdown and homelessness
What kind of goals? • Health. • Safety. • Addictions. • Financial Circumstances. • Social Skills. • Education/Training/Employment. • Family Relationships. • Dreams and Aspirations for the future.
How it works….. • Ptb Teams are trained within a local community, supported and resourced by a partnership (local church, 3rd sector, Statutory Services and Local Government) • Members are linked in with a group of befriender buddies and allocated a key link Mentor.
We take referrals from… • 3rd Sector organisations. • Housing. • Statutory Services. • Criminal Justice (CFEO/Ptb Team) • Self Referral or Community Engagement source.
Social Events These have included Quiz Nights, Chess Clubs, Shopping Clubs, BBQ, Hill Walking, Cycling, Coffee Clubs, Outings etc. • Social Action Programmes ‘Hit Squads’ – Painting & Decorating Supporting our Members to paint & decorate their homes • Community Awareness Talks Talks in Schools, Churches and Radio Presentations all aimed to make our communities more compassionate and to re educate about reasons behind homelessness and early intervention strategies.
