  3. English III – American Literature • English III is an exploration of American Literature and is designed to develop the student’s reading and writing skills through close reading of poetry, short stories, a play and several novels. This course includes the study of American writers from various cultures. • Students also study grammar, vocabulary, and the proper use of the mechanics of the English language in order to create more sophisticated written compositions.

  4. Grading • Major grades – At least one of each of the following for each six week grading period: • Written response to reading / Journal assignments • Formal writing product • Test grade over core objectives • Grading policy: • Major grades 60% • Quizzes/Homework 40%

  5. Concerns • Tutoring Times: • Tuesday/Thursday 7:30 AM • By appointment • Late Work and Makeup: • Please refer to your Student Handbook for the AHS policy on these matters. • Grades: • Every attempt will be made to have grades in Skyward by Friday afternoon. Please check your grades over the weekend. If an assignment or test is scored below a 70 you will have the next week to come in and improve the grade. The first step is an academic intervention method. Then the assignment may be redone.

  6. Materials • You are responsible for your own supplies for class. You will need a pen and paper for every class. You may also find it helpful to have a folder or notebook for your English papers. You must also furnish your own personal supplies such as tissue and hand sanitizer.

  7. Books • Silent Sustained Reading • Springboard • Literature Book • Vocabulary Book • Reader/Writer Notebook

  8. Classroom Norms • We are here to learn. As young adults you are expected to be respectful of yourself and others. This includes following directions and being prepared for class. • Work must be in MLA format • I will add norms if needed.

  9. The Classroom • This classroom will extend beyond its four walls. You will be expected to do work outside of the classroom. • There will be an online component to the class.
