2 Timothy 3:14-4:5 Listening for challenge
Pretty pretty please, Don’t you ever ever feel, Like you’re less than perfect. “Perfect” by Pink Repent, for the Kingdom of God is at hand. “Gospel” by Jesus
The Scriptures should challenge us. • Growth Change • Teaching, training • Less to more • Repentance Change • Wrong to right • Reproof, correction • “…SO THAT the one who belongs to God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
The Scriptures should challenge us. GOD Gospel Life Kingdom Living Reflecting Christ
The Scriptures should challenge us. Threat Challenge Opportunity for growth
The Scriptures should challenge our culture. • Won’t put up with sound doctrine (v. 3a) • Listen for what they want to hear (v. 3b) • Find teachers who won’t challenge (v. 3c) • Choose lies over listening to truth (v. 4) Are we falling into these patterns or allowing God—through the Scriptures—to challenge us and our culture?
Practical Tips • Read SLOWLY and multiple times • Engage your mind and heart • Think about what the text is really saying • Practice CONFESSION • In what ways am I not living out the text? • Where do I need God to transform me? • “Search me, O LORD, and know my heart, Test me, and know my anxious thoughts, See if there is any offensive way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting.” PSALM 139:23-24
Proverbs 12:1 “Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, whoever hates correction is stupid.
