  2. Contributions • Born in Bamberg on December 22,1928 • Graduated from Greenville High School (1944); lettered in football, basketball, and baseball and served as Student Body President • Captured three state championships as coach at North Augusta High School

Contributions, continued • Served as head coach and athletic director at Presbyterian College from 1963-1995 • Received the Order of the Palmetto in 1984 from Governor Dick Riley • Member of South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame, Greenville High School Hall of Fame, and Outstanding Contribution to Amateur Football Award Foundation Hall of Fame

Education • Attended Greenville High School, where he served as Student Body President and played football, basketball, and baseball • Presbyterian college, 1944 to 1948; lettered in football and baseball and served as a Second Lieutenant in the ROTC program • Masters of Education from the University of South Carolina (1956)

  5. Family • Married Joy Y. Godfrey on June 21, 1949 • Three children: Joy Gault Gruber, Emmie Ann Gault McLean, and Calhoun F. Gault Jr. (now deceased) • Five grandchildren: Kimberly Gruber, Lynn Gruber, Melissa McLean, Elizabeth Ann McLean, and Thomas McLean

Click here to listen to telephone interview Interview 1.)What is your best memory from Greenville High School? • “The best memories I have of Greenville High School, of course, are of friends that you make up there and the wonderful teachers and administrators that we had at school. Of course, the friends that you make, you make for life. I think that’s one thing about Greenville High School: that you are always a graduate, and you always remember the good people up there that you associated with.” 2.)What was your plan or goal at Greenville High School? • “My goal, of course, was to finish high school, then go on to college. I think all along I wanted to be a coach. I had the privilege of being able to coach football, and having played under ‘Speedy’ Speers and ‘Slick’ Moore up at Greenville High School. I think they had a lot to do with me wanting to go into coaching.”

  7. Interview (Continued) 3.) Who influenced you the most? • “I assure you, there were so many of them, it’s hard to say. I can say the two coaches, ‘Slick’ Moore and ‘Speedy’ Speers. Of course, M.T. Anderson, I was fortunate to have him as a principal…Mr. Johns. So many teachers, so many folks that you remember… Mrs. Bell Free. Gosh, those were people that made you want to study, made you want to work, and that made you proud to be a member of a Greenville High Red Raider athletic team and academic group.” 4.) What is your greatest accomplishment? • “I think my biggest one was the having the opportunity to work with so many young people as a football coach and as an athletic director at the high school level and at the college level. I think the greatest accomplishment I had was to be able to help folks that you watched as they went along in their careers and be so proud of them. Any accomplishment I made is a result of those people that I’ve been associated with.”
