Sheep heart dissection Please refer to the large Lab Manual for directions and instructions (exercise 30 in many books)
Your goal for today • Determine how blood moves through the heart • Identify all the valves • Understand the difference between right and left sides • Begin the dissection which you will finish up tomorrow
Heart Dissection Instructions • Always wear apron and safety glasses (back of the room) • Please refer to the large Lab Manual for directions and instructions (exercise 30; page 306-307) • Obtain preserved heart, dissecting tray, instruments, and gloves • Please follow directions of the lab sheet and refer to the lab manual if you have any questions • Spend significant time studying the outside of your heart • Examine valves and pumping before cutting
Time to cut • The first incision is along the right ventricle and atrium, allowing us to see inside the right side of the heart. • The right ventricle can be identified by squeezing the heart, since the myocardium on the right side is much less rigid than that of the left ventricle. • This incision allows us to see the tricuspid valve and the right ventricular outflow tract which includes the pulmonary valve.
Clean up • Rinse your heart and place it in a gallon size bag with your names on it • Rinse all tools and dissection pan • Pat everything dry • Clean off your lab table and push in lab stools Failure to clean up will land you in detention, and you will clean up for 30 minutes after school.
