AFRICAN IMMIGRANT IN NEW JERSEY:A CELEBRATION • Willingboro Public Library decided to write a proposal for the 2013 New Jersey Council for the Humanities mini grant. • In house meetings were held to brainstorm on topics for the grant proposal. • The library African committee met with the Library African Advisory Board (LAAB) and decided on the topics and needs to be pursued through the grant
AFRICAN IMMIGRANTS IN NEW JERSEY: A CELEBRATION • We focused on using the humanities to solve intergroup conflict. • The aim of the program been developed was to create a dialogue, build community and dispel stereotype thus improving relationship and resolving conflict mainly with Africans and African Americans.
AFRICAN IMMIGRANTS IN NEW JERSEY: A CELEBRATION • We contacted scholars from NJ, DE, PA, who were available to serve as presenters during the grant period. • We needed topics to be discussed extensively • We planned a program for each topic.
AFRICAN IMMIGRANTS IN NEW JERSEY: A CELEBRATION • Followed guidelines on the grant application • Selected presenters who met NJCH standards and had expertise on the topic • Kept deadlines • Each program maintained the focus of achieving the overall goal WRITING THE GRANT
AFRICAN IMMIGRANTS IN NEW JERSEY:A CELEBRATION • Willingboro Public Library won the mini-grant award of $3,000 in 2013 from the New Jersey Council for the Humanities.
AFRICAN IMMIGRANTS IN NEW JERSEY:A CELEBRATION Partnership Links Inc. Rancocas Valley Chapter provided refreshment for all the programs. Many of their members attended all of the programs. • NJCH grant fund covered and the library’s contribution covered all of the expenditure except for refreshments.
MARKETING • Bought banner and yard signs. • Bought Facebook ad. • Flyers and postcards distributed in library and community. • Sidewalk sign and big screen tv. • Developed direct email list. • Newspaper articles. • Township newsletter. • Library e-newsletter. • Word of mouth!

AFRICAN IMMIGRANT IN NEW JERSEY:A CELEBRATION COMMENTS FROM SURVEY I learned the similarities and differences between African and African American churches. I’ve begun realizing the valuable economic impact Africans in America have on the economy. It is staggering to realize how much in debt U.S. truly is to this segment. Information not seen on TV or heard in the news. • The African Immigrant program has been an invaluable resource and worthy public service to the community. The cross- cultural experiences shared during the forums have been immense, telling the stories and acknowledging the contributions of a community whose stories are not often heard or told.

Misconceptions. • Education level of Africans vs Americans • Educational and skill level and the jobs they hold upon arrival to the US. • Major importance of the remittance they make to their home country • The negative perception that immigrants do not contribute to the economy.
