The Titanic Tragedy It was April 10, 1912. The Titanic had set off on its first voyage. It was traveling from England to New York. The 2,207 passengers were filled with excitement. They were on board the finest ship in the world. They were also on the first ship to be called “unsinkable.” But on the evening of April 14, something went terribly wrong. At 11:45 P.M. the Titanic struck an iceberg. Within two and a half hours, the ship had sunk. The lives of 1,502 people were lost. The Titanic had enough lifeboats for just 1,178 people. But only about 700 people actually filled the boats. The crew had ordered that “women and children go first.” This rule mostly helped passengers who were traveling in first class. Arachne was a poor young woman from Greece. She spun the most beautiful cloth. People thought that Athena, the goddess of crafts, had taught Arachne her skill. But Arachne denied this talk. She boasted that she wove better than Athena did. She even challenged Athena to a weaving contest. On the day of the contest, Arachne and Athena worked all day. Each woman wove many colorful cloth designs. When they had finished, Athena saw that Arachne’s work really was more beautiful than her own. Athena became furious and tore up Arachne’s weaving. Then she turned Arachne into a spider. Since that day, spiders have woven beautiful webs. What can you tell about Arachne? She was proud of her skill. She was a shy woman. She was jealous of Athena.

Most of this wrapping ends up being thrown away. Don’t you realize that too much trash is a big problem inour country? An average American family throws away more than one ton of trash a year. About 80 percent of it is dumped into landfills. Often, the buried trash does not break down quickly. Plastics can stay buried in the land for hundreds of years. Please start to use less packaging for your products. Use materials that can be recycled. Try to encourage your customers to find ways to use the packaging again. I hope you will listen to my suggestions. Together, we can help save the eart.
