  4. Localization Coverage and representation of topics matches the literary warrant needs in the language group

  5. Interoperability Translation contains categories that are compatible with the English-language standard edition and other translations to foster the use of Dewey as a multilingual switching language

Translation Roles: Editorial Team (1) • Understanding of DDC and English • Development of policy statement in consultation with sponsor, advisory group, and OCLC • Translation (may be separate team) • Consultation with Dewey editorial team (may include one-week working visit to LC Dewey Editorial Office + additional classification training in LC Decimal Classification Division)

Expansions for Vietnamese DDC 14 (2) • Vietnamese political parties: • 324.2597 expanded beyond DDC 22 for Vietnamese political parties • Marxism-Leninism and related topics: • 320.53 for political ideology • 335.4 for economic system and interdisciplinary works • 335.4346 for Vietnamese Communism and Ho Chi Minh’s ideas

  20. Expansions for Vietnamese DDC 14 (2) • Languages of Vietnam: • 495.9 expanded up to (and in a few cases beyond) DDC 22 for languages spoken in Vietnam • Literatures of Vietnam: • 895.9 corresponding expansions for literatures of Vietnam • Literary periods for Vietnamese literature

  23. Editorial Software (1) • Vietnamese team started using Microsoft Word • Later obtained international version of Pansoft editorial software developed for the German translation • Translation team copied and pasted from Word

  24. Editorial Software (2) • Pansoft software designed to use XML format distributed by OCLC and return translation database in same format • Translators need not worry about format • Unless working on an expansion • Pansoft print formatter currently limited to tables, schedules, Relative Index • Vietnamese Manual was done using Word
