Information on Snail Kite • The Snail Kite lives mainly in South American and in some parts of Central America and Florida’s Everglade. • The Kites main diet are aquatic apple snails, but they will also eat turtles, fresh water crabs, and small rodents. • The Kites nest in colonies in trees built of small branches. The female lays 2-4 eggs once or twice a season, and both parents incubate the eggs for 26-28 days. • The young Kites fledge in 6-7 weeks, and they become sexually mature in less than a year. • Adult male kites are slate gray with red bills and a broad dark-and-white tail, but the females are a more subdued brown, and the juveniles are a streaked tan and buff.
Why is it endangered? • Several reason why the Snail Kite is endangered: • Marsh draining for agricultural purposes • The flooding of Marshes • Drought • Hunters killing them off as pests • Human occupation and construction on Marchland • In 1972 the amount of Snail Kites left was only 65.
What's being done? • The preservation of the wetlands they inhabit is top priority. • They prohibit commercial and recreational activities within 500 feet of active kite nests and allow only critical activities within 1,640 feet. • The Nest areas and birds are always monitored to ensure no abnormalities occur in their behavior.
My Plan to Save them… • The closing off of the Marshland to human activity. • The recreation of Marshland areas. • Increasing the Apple Snail population, by increasing their food supply. • Monitoring the Marshlands from a distance, and seasonal counts of the Snail Kites and Apple Snail population.
