SP • Safety Parameter • A quantitative unit, the value of which provides a level of safety consistent with that provided by relevant codes and standards in current use in the elevator industry and good engineering practice.
SR • Safety Requirement • Requirement intended to eliminate or sufficiently mitigate the risk of harm to users, non-users, and elevator personnel using or associated with elevators and escalators.

A17.1 - 2010 Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators
Definitions Creep: slight incremental, natural movement of the suspension means over the arc of contact with the driving sheave due to tractive forces….Creep is independent of the motion status or direction of rotation of the driving sheave Note: Creep exists in all traction systems and is not loss of traction, and can occur while the drive sheave is stationary or rotating.
Means, Compensation The method by which unbalanced forces due to suspension means are reduced, utilizing one or more compensation members and their terminations.
Means, Suspension Tensile component that support, raise, and lower a car, counterweight, or both.
Member, Compensation A single component of a traction elevator the weight of which provides tensile forces on the car and counterweight that reduce unbalanced forces due to the weight of the suspension means.
Means, Suspension An individual load-carrying component of the suspension means (e.g., a single rope or belt)
Suspension member, noncircular elastomeric-coated steel (hoisting) A noncircular suspension member, such as an elastomeric-coated steel belt constructed of encapsulated steel cords, used to raise and lower an elevator, dumbwaiter, or material lift car or its counterweight or both.
2.14.5.9 Folding Car Doors • Effort to open less than 30 pounds • Shall not be power opened to a distance exceeding one-third of the clear opening , and in no case more than 10 inches • Handles shall be located with 48 inches of the car operating devise when the door is closed and between 15 and 48 inches above the floor.
2.14.7 Illumination of Cars Cars are required to have two lamps or sets of lamps • However, you only have to use one lamp or set of lamps at a time provided: • Each lamp of set of lamps provide minimum illumination level. • System arranged to automatically illuminate the unlit lamp following a failure of the first lamp. • System designed to emit an audible or visual signal that notifies personnel of lamp failure.
2.14.7.1.3 • Auxiliary lighting shall provide 0.2 fc in front of the car operating panel containing. • (6) “PHONE” button and operating instruction
Section 2.20 Suspension means and their connections • Only the following shall be permitted: • (a) steel wire ropes constructed in accordance with ASME A17.6, Part 1 • (b) aramid fiber ropes constructed in accordance with ASME A17.6, Part 2 • (c) noncircular elastomeric-coated steel suspension members constructed in accordance with ASME A17.6, Part 3
2.24.2 Sheaves and Drums • 2007 Code says “shall be of metal” now • 2010 Code says “shall be provided with steel shafts and metal bearings. Sheaves constructed of plastic, fiber-reinforced plastic, or combinations thereof shall be non-regroovable.”
2.24.2.2 Minimum Pitch Diameter • Steel ropes and noncircular elastomeric-coated steel suspension members 40 to 1 • Aramid ropes used for suspension or compensation. 16 to 1 • Steel ropes and noncircular elastomeric-coated steel suspension members used for compensation. 32 to 1
2.24.2.3 Traction • 2.24.2.3.1 Steel, 2.24.2.3.2 Aramid, 2.24.2.3.3 Belt • All three say “Where the grooves are used to provide traction, sufficient traction shall be provided between the means and the groove, and in event of (nonmetallic lining, cover, or elastomeric coating) failure, between the means and the remaining sheave groove to safely stop and hold the car with rated load from rated speed in the down direction.
6.1.4.1.2 Escalator Rated Speed • Variation of the escalator speed after start-up shall conform to • Acceleration and deceleration shall not exceed 1.0 f/sec/sec • Rated speed is not exceeded • Minimum speed not less than 10 ft/min • Passenger detection provided at both landings • Deceleration does not occur until 3x time for passenger transfer between landings • Means to detect failure of passenger detection if failure detected run at full rated speed only.
6.1.6.3.2 Escalator Speed-Monitoring Device • Cause the electric power to be removed from the driving-machine motor and brake should the speed exceed maximum by more than 20%. • Devise is manual reset type.
6.2.4.1.2 Moving Walks Rated Speed • Variation of the escalator speed after start-up shall conform to • Acceleration and deceleration shall not exceed 1.0 f/sec/sec • Rated speed is not exceeded • Minimum speed not less than 10 ft/min • Passenger detection provided at both landings • Deceleration does not occur until 3x time for passenger transfer between landings • Means to detect failure of passenger detection if failure detected run at full rated speed only.

8.3.12 Suspension-Member Tests • Required on combination of suspension member, driving sheave design, and materials of construction. • Inspection Speed Test • Test Under Emergency –Stop Conditions. • Tests allowed to be conducted elsewhere. • Documentation of test results allowed in engineers report.
8.4.3.1 Retainers for Suspension Members • Retainers shall be provided on deflecting and secondary sheaves, driving-machine sheaves and drums, compensating sheaves, governor sheaves on cars and counterweights to inhibit the displacement of suspension members.
8.6.4.19 Periodic Test Requirements – Category 1 • Oil Buffers • Safeties • Governors • Power Operation of Door Systems • Ascending Car Overspeed Protection • Traction-Loss Detection Means • Broken-Suspension-Member and Residual –Strength Detection Means
8.6.4.20 Periodic Test Requirements – Category 5 • Car and Counterweight Safeties • Governors • Oil Buffers • Drive Sheaves With Nonmetallic Groove Surfaces and Steel Wire Ropes
8.6.5.5 Gland Packing and Seals • 8.6.5.5.1 Examination and Maintenance • When a cylinder packing or seal or a pressure-piping seal is replaced, the integrity of the entire hydraulic system shall be verified by operating it at relief pressure for not less than 15 sec.
8.11.1.7 Unique or Product-Specific Procedures or Methods • Where unique or product-specific procedures or methods are required to inspect or test equipment, such procedures or methods shall be provided by the manufacturer or installer. These procedures and any unique devices required by the procedures for inspection and testing shall be accessible on site to elevator personnel.
Maintenance Control Programs • Examination and maintenance of equipment based on • Equipment age, condition, and accumulated wear • Design and quality of equipment • Usage • Environmental conditions • Improved technology • Manufacturer’s recommendations for any SIL rated devise or circuit
MCP Cont. • Maintaining the installation in compliance with section 8.6 for cleaning, lubricating, and adjusting applicable components • Test of equipment at scheduled intervals. • All code required written procedures.
MCP’s Cont. • Instructions for locating the Maintenance Control Program shall be provide in or on the controller • Maintenance records required by 8.6.1.4
8.6.1.4 Maintenance Records • Description of maintenance task performed and dates • Description and dates of examinations, tests, adjustments, repairs and replacements • Description and dates of call back (trouble calls) • Written record of the findings for firefighters’ emergency operations • Written records to document compliance with replacement criteria of A17.6
MCP’s Cont. • Instructions for locating the Maintenance Control Program shall be provide in or on the controller • Maintenance records required by 8.6.1.4 • MCP shall be accessible to elevator personnel • Procedures for tests, periodic inspections, maintenance, replacements, adjustments, and repairs for all SIL rated devises
MCP’s Cont • Where unique or product-specific procedures or methods are required to inspect or test equipment, such procedures or methods shall be included • Procedures for tests; periodic inspections; maintenance; replacement; adjustments; and repairs for traction-loss detection means, broken-suspension-member detection means, residual-strength detection means, and related circuits
IDAPA 07.04.02 - Updates 004. ADOPTION AND INCORPORATION BY REFERENCE. 01. Documents. The following codes, amendments, and updates are hereby adopted and incorporated by reference into these rules for all conveyances subject to this chapter. (4-2-08) a. ANSI/ASME A17.1 2007 2010, Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators with 2008 Addenda with the following exceptions: (4-2-08) i. Compliance with section 2.8.3.3.2 shall require that the means for disconnecting the main power as required by this section to be within sight of the controller. ii. Compliance with section 8.11.2.3.3, Category 5 Periodic Testing of oil buffers 8.11.2.1.5(c) Car and Counterweight Buffer testing shall be conducted at slow speed in accordance with Item 5.9.2.1(a) in ANSI/ASME A17.2 2007. iii. Compliance with Section 2.2.2.5 which requires a sump pump or drain in the elevator pit shall be optional. If a sump pump or drain is installed it shall meet the requirements of this section. A sump with a cover shall be provided in each elevator pit. f. ANSI/ASME A17.6 2010 Standard for Elevator Suspension, and Governor Systems (X-X-XX) g. ANSI/ASME A17.7 2007 Performance-based Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators (X-X-XX)
