  4. Christian Humanists • Gave humanism a religious slant • Desiderius Erasmus – Praise of Folly – believed in Christianity of the heart & criticized the Catholic Church. • Thomas More – Utopia described a perfect world (beheaded by Henry VIII) • Francois Rabelias– Gargantuan & Pantagruel

  5. William Shakespeare • Born in 1564 • Was a playwright & a poet • Macbeth, King Lear, Hamlet, Romeo & Juliet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream • Used history as a source for plays: Julius Caesar, Anthony & Cleopatra

  6. The Elizabethan Age • Elizabeth I – reigned from 1558 – 1603 • Well Educated • Spoke French, Italian, Latin, & Greek • Was a great Patron of the arts

  7. The Printing Press • Johann Gutenberg – adapted the Chinese invention of the movable type to create the printing press • 1455 printed a complete Bible • Made book printing faster & cheaper • Allowed ideas to spread quicker • Bibles printed in vernacular
