At it’s meeting on 18th April 2007 Council approved a report, by the Deputy Chief Executive, on the Review of Committee Structures. • Part of the report dealt with the role of Select Committees and also listed matters which came under each respective Portfolio. • The report stated that the Environment Select Committee will deal with matters which contribute towards; • enhancing and ensuring access for all to environments that are valued, protected and enjoyed, • the provision of a sustainable transport system which improves access to essential services for all, reducing reliance on the car, • reducing waste to landfill and increase recycling and reducing carbon emissions • Environmental protection services including, public nuisances, stray dog services, pest control, contaminated land • street cleansing, graffiti, abandoned vehicles and flytipping • provision of parks, allotments and open spaces

Environmental Services in the Environment Portfolio • Service Achievements examples • Increased Recycling rate from 10.7% (April 05) to 37.5%(April 07) • Increased participation levels on Kerbside recycling from 52% to 85% • Improved the BVPI (199a) on cleansing to 14% inline with the LAA stretched target • Only L.A. in Staffordshire (and one of few nationally) to introduce district wide Invessel composting • Gained countryside stewardship funding for 10 years to manage a range of ecologically and diverse sites • Developed and managed a volunteer programme for countryside sites delivering 36,000 man hours of work
