  2. The Change • Oklahoma has used PASS skills for state testing standards • Curriculum was written to be compatible with those PASS skills • Oklahoma is now using the National Common Core Standards • Curriculum had to be changed to meet the National standards

  4. Math Vocabulary & Concepts The district uses 3 types of curriculum

  5. Pre-K and Kindergarten • Pre-K and Kindergarten use Everyday Math • There is wonderful on-line support page for parents and children • http://em-ccss.everydaymathonline.com

First and Second Grade • First and Second Grade uses Math Connects • http://macmillanmh.com/math/mathconnects/ok This website also has student help, along with parental help for homework It provides vocabulary, on-line games and activities, lesson reviews, and quizzes for each chapter and lesson.

  7. Third through Fifth Grade • The upper elementary grades use Scott Foresman Math • For online help and games you can access the Everyday Math website and Math Connects website • http://em-ccss.everydaymathonline.com • http://macmillanmh.com/math/mathconnects/ok • There are several math on-line game websites, as well as apps for the Apple products. • McGraw-Hill has a set of math apps for pre-K through 5th grade

  8. Math Vocabulary • In the three curriculum sets the concept for teaching math is the same as what we learned • The content, lesson plans are written differently • The main difference is the vocabulary • In McLaughlin’s book he gives several examples of the vocabulary changes

Some Examples • Addend - one of two or more numbers added together to find a sum: 2+3=5 • Minuend – the number being subtracted: 5-3=2 • Subtrahend – the number being subtracted: 5-3=2 • Difference/Remainder = new number left after the subtraction: 5-3=2 • Product – the answer when numbers are multiplied together: 2x5=10 • Dividend – number that is divided by the divisor: 360\10=36 • Divisor- the number that is divided into the dividend: 360\10=36 • Quotient- the answer when numbers are divided: 360\10=36

  10. “Right Kind of Writing” What does this mean? Two Major types of writing 1. Writing about Reading 2. Writing

  11. Writing about Reading • There are four genres and within each genre there are three goals • The three goals are what our children need to be striving towards in their writing • Thinking within the Text • Thinking beyond the Text • Thinking about the Text

  12. Functional Writing • This includes oral discussion and presentation, you are writing “to get the job done.” • Examples • Note & sketches • Short Writes • Graphic Organizers • Letters • Diaries/Journals

  13. Narrative Writing • This tells a story • Example • Summary • Cartoon/storyboarding

  14. Informative Writing • This organizes facts into a coherent whole • Examples • Author Study • Illustrator Study • Interview • “How To” • “All about”

  15. Poetic Writing • This is selecting and arranging words to convey meaning that evokes feeling and sensory imagery

  16. Writing • “Writing” to write plays a more leading role in the education of our children • There are four parts to “Writing” • Shared writing-when teachers and students compose their writing together, which leads to to discussion

Writing cont… • Interactive Writing-is identical and proceeds as Shared writing. • The exception is the teacher will invite a child to contribute to one part of writing, ex: ( child writing a letter or a word) • Modeled Writing- is used in all grades, the teacher demonstrates a particular writing genre and the student uses it to model her own.

  18. Writing…. • The last genre of “Writing” is the Purpose & Genre • Within this genre there are four sub-genres which have up to five purposes

  19. Narrative • A story, with a beginning, series of events, and ending • Memoir • Short fiction • Biography • This type of writing is used grades from Pre-K and up

Informational Genre • Tells about information from facts • Literary Non-Fiction; in the form of reports and textbooks • How to produce interesting, literary non-fiction focusing on a topic • Is preferred in older grades • Expository Non-Fiction; features an article or report, which focuses on one or more aspects • Also preferred in older grades

  21. Informational Genre….. • Essay- an opinion editorial-begins in upper elementary • Short Literary Composition • States a point of view • Analytical • Critical • Persuasive

  22. Poetic • Used to express feelings, sensory images, ideas or stories • Traditional Rhymes • Songs • Verses • Free Verse; lyric, narrative, limerick • Concrete Poetry; haiku, list poems, formula poems • This is used in all grades

  23. Functional Genres • To perform a practical task, from a simple communication to a sophisticated letter • Friendly letters • Formal letters • Lists & Procedures • Test Writing • Writing about Reading • This is used in all grades
