  1. “Understanding branding is important. Branding is, in reality, the identity you project to the public, to your clients or customers, and to your vendors. Your brand speaks loudly about who you are and how you see your business relationships with those who matter most. Deciding on a branding concept is important, a decision that should not be taken on lightly.”

Education - Fashion Tim Walker: • Completed his degree in 1994 • Worked as a freelance assistant in London • Eventually became full-time assistant to Richard Avedon Rankin: • Started Accounting degree aged 21 • Dropped out after first year to pursue his photography hobby (re-started at A Level) • Promoted club nights with Jefferson (D&C) for money while studying

Education – Advertising Reid Miles: • Poor schooling as a child • Raised with a strong work ethic • Thanks his upbringing for his dedication to hard work, which has defined his success Arthur Beck: • Studied at Newark School of the Arts (ad design) • Course contained a photography module which inspired him • Took an assisting job in a local studio shared by 2 photographers • Bede would challenge his employers to darts games, spent his winnings on equipment

  4. Education • In more cut-throat industries like fashion, a lot can depend on who you know, but what you know is important too • A good education is important but not necessary, a good portfolio is essential • Good relationships with others in the industry is important for future networking

Key points when preparing for a competition • Seek out competitions • Check the organizers website and look into the regulations for the competition, get organized. • Get in the mood and stay there. Never forget that the chance to get a great shot is always around no matter where you are. • Never start late!

Gaining Representation Olivia Gideon Thomson of WeFolk “Usually I take people on from recommendations from people in the industry - it's quite a small world once you're in it.” • Be recognisable • Be seen • Experience the industry • Publish books, work for magazines • Be in contact with art buyers and galleries • Your website needs to be easy to navigate/quick loading • Your cover letter needs to say why you want to be represented not what you think they can offer, or how great you are. • Arrange a 'promo piece' to sell yourself • Push yourself, allow yourself to grow by testing and shooting all the time
