Daily Review: What is a plural noun?
9-22-10 Objective: • I will apply new knowledge of common, proper, and compound nouns in my writing. • HW: Write 5 sentences using possessive nouns.
Singular Possessive Nouns: • When you want to show the possession of one thing you write ‘s. • For example: • The dog’s bone. (one dog owns a bone) • The boy’s basketball. (one boy owns a basketball) • The mother’s make-up. (one mom owns make-up) • The father’s work. (one father owns the work) • The girl’s doll. (one girl owns a doll) Boys
Plural Possessive Nouns: • When you want to show the possession of more than one thing you write s’. • For example: • The dogs’ bone. (more than one dog owns the bone) • The girls’ doll. (more than one girl owns the doll • The boys’ basketball. (more than one boy owns the basketball. • The mothers’ make-up. (more than one mom owns the make-up) • The fathers’ work. (more than one father owns the work)
The Point of Possessives: • Possessive nouns tells us how many things own how many other things. • Put this into your writing so the reader is clear of what you are saying. • Now that you know the possessive rules, find them when you are reading.
A Note: • Sometimes you will have more than one possessive in a sentence. • For example: The girls’ and boys’ homework is in the bin. What is this sentence telling me? How about these? The dog’s food and the cat’s food is in the cabinet. The dogs’ food and the cat’s food is in the cabinet. The dogs’ food and the cats’ food is in the cabinet.
Another Note: • All singular and plural nouns that need to be possessive you need to add an ‘s. • For example: • Women is plural. To show more than one woman you need to add an ‘s. Women’s woman’s • This tells the reader there is more than one woman and more than one woman owns something. • NOTE: If the plural noun already ends in s you only need to add an apostrophe. For example: babies’ baby’s This tells us more than one baby owns something.
Work On: • Page 87 • Writing Possessive Nouns • 1-10 • Write the sentence using the correct plural form. Underline the possessive noun.
