  1. CDA/CSEM 2008 • CAO meeting held in Montreal in conjunction with the CDA/CSEM • Retinal camera – Topcon • DE’s requested talks from OD’s on DR and other eye diseases • CDA/CSEM 2009 – Montreal in conjunction with the World Federation of Diabetes and the Quebec Diabetes Association

  2. Booth Upgrades • Video splitter • Illumination control • Reconfigure booth to optimize flow • Take home PPT for DE’s • Take home “plug and play” DVD for DE’s • Guest book to send posters and other resource information on eye care.

Educate the Educators • Communication with DE’s will be the key focus for the diabetes committee this year • We procured a list of DE Chapters and their coordinates for Canada • We are preparing a PPT to be uploaded to the CAO members website to present to DE Chapters • Provincial diabetes liaisons will promote and help facilitate the implementation of this initiative

Evolution of Telehealth • 1994 - Information Highway Advisory Council identified the health sector for new technology innovations • 1999 - Advisory Council on Health Infostructure recommended a nation wide health information highway assuring quality, and accessibility of health services across the entire spectrum of health care in Canada. • 2001 - $500 million federal investment was granted to Canada Health Infoway (CHI) Inc. to foster and accelerate the development and implementation of eHealth solutions. • 2003 – additional $600 million to CHI to accelerate the development of Electronic Health Records (EHR)

Infoway Corporation Members • Canada Health Infoway (Infoway) is a unique organization by virtue of its membership – the 14 Deputy Ministers of Health from the federal, provincial and territorial governments. Board of Directors Canada Health Infoway's (Infoway's) Board of Directors includes two federal representatives, one representative from each of the five regions of Canada and four to six independent directors selected from the private sector.

SDI Canadian Institutes of Health Research Award 2008 In a superb example of knowledge translation, a group of Edmonton-based ophthalmologists and computer programmers has developed software that captures 3-D images of a patient's eyes and transmits them to a specialist who can analyze the images to determine if the patient requires treatment. This program is already helping patients and reducing health-care costs, and the software could potentially be adapted to screen for other eye diseases, such as macular degeneration. Furthermore, because it is internet-based, it can be used to assist patients and physicians working anywhere in the world

SDI • SECURE DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING • Specializing in Teleophthalmology Solutions The primary focus has been the identification of treatable diabetic retinopathy with tele-ophthalmology.  More recently research has focused on both macular degeneration and glaucoma. First Nations and Inuit Branch of the federal government for project(s) in Alberta , Saskatchewan and Manitoba .  Tele-ophthalmology consultation services are provided to the government of the Northwest Territories
