  2. Established 1873 – ‘The Physical Society of London’: Leading international professional body and learned society; Professional (international) membership now exceeds 40,000; IOP inaugural meeting 1921, first annual publication (Reports On Progress in Physics) 1933. History

  3. As a not-for-profit society publisher our mission is to promote the advancement and dissemination of physics: Setting professional standards for physicists and awarding professional qualifications; Promoting physics through scientific conferences, education and science policy advice; Scientific publishing and electronic dissemination of physics. The IOP Mission

  4. IOP Worldwide Initiatives • Partnership with 35 other Physics Societies, providing reduced rates and enhanced benefits to members. • Grants for travel to scientific conferences. • Funding for mathematical and science initiatives in Africa. • Providing educational materials to developing nations. • Spearheading a new program on physics and economic development for developing nations, to be run from the International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Italy. • Developing partnerships with Latin American Physics Societies.

  5. Not-for-profit, dedicated to science communication: 47 journals in physics and related areas, providing 20,000 peer reviewed articles per year; 9 millon articles downloaded in 2006. Specialized community websites providing latest news, events, conference information and company information. (www.iop.org) Publications

  21. Current Community Websites: • PhysicsWorld.com • Compoundsemiconductor.net • Optics.org • Nanotechweb.org • Medicalphysicsweb.org

  22. To advance and disseminate physics, IOP introduced a number of open access initiatives: Journal of Physics: Conference Series; New Journal of Physics; This Month’s Papers; IOP Select; Environmental Research Letters (Brand New!) Eprintweb.org (Brand New!) Community Websites feature pre-selected free articles. Open Access

  23. NJP - Rising Star in Physics Essential Science Indicators 1996.1.1-2006.10.31

  24. Environmental Research Letters • A brand new, high-impact, open-access letters journal, Environmental Research Letters (ERL) provides research articles, commentaries, news, views, and reviews. • The aim is to also serve as a forum for meeting and professional notices for the environmental science community.

  25. IOP and CAPES: Partners in Science Success • IOP Historic Archive purchased in December 2005. • Access to current IOP materials began in early 2006: • 4-year agreement that continues through 2009. • Includes coverage and complete access to 37 IOP titles.

  26. The CAPES Count: • 108,751 articles downloaded in 2006* (*not a full year). • 89,597 articles downloaded thru August this year. • Most popular journal downloaded is Journal of Physics Condensed Matter, with 10,671 total downloads in 2006 and 8751 in 2007 thru July 21. (Journal of Physics A is a very close second.) • CAPES member with the most downloads is USP.

  27. How does CAPES compare: • To another national license in the Americas….. • Their total downloads in 2006: 254,586 • Their C.P.D. in 2006 was $5.058. • CAPES • The total downloads in 2006: 108,751* *not a full year’s access • The C.P.D. in 2006 is $4.18. This is dropping dramatically and is slightly over $3 midyear 2007.

  28. Doing Business with IOP • As a not-for-profit small society publisher we have more flexibility on contracts and licensing. • All licenses can be signed by our Business Director in England, and/or our CEO for the Americans in Philadelphia. • IOP has never had any contract litigation with our consortia partners. • IOP has never had a consortia partner in the Americas cancel or not renew their license. • IOP prefers 3 year deals, but can be flexible when the customer requests something different.
