  2. Pure Food and Drug Act, June 30th, 1906. For preventing the manufacture, sale, or transportation of adulterated or misbranded or poisonous or deleterious foods, drugs, medicines, and liquors, and for regulating traffic therein, and for other purposes.

  3. Main idea • The Pure Food and Drug Act of June 30, 1906 is a United States federal law that required federal inspection of meat products and forbade the manufacture, sale, or transportation of abused food products and poisonous medicines.

  4. Point of view/bias • Muckrakers in the 20th century heightened public awareness of careless food preparations causing President Theodore Roosevelt to take action, creating The Pure Food and Drug Act.

  5. Outside information/inferences • 1. Upton Sinclair’s “The Jungle”, was a great influence on Roosevelt’s decision to pass the act. • 2. Made to protect the consumer. • 3. Companion piece to the Meat Inspection Amendment. • 4. Dr. Harvey W. Wiley, chief chemist of the Department of Agriculture, was the moving force behind the law.  • 5. Convictions carried fines of up to three hundred dollars and imprisonment for up to one year.
