What do employers want? • Academic training • Previous work experience* • Communication skills • Adaptability/organizational fit • Dependability, judgment, and character • General management skills • *No experience/experience required catch-22
Powerful Resumes “You never get a second chance to make a good first impression” – Unknown
First things first…the cover letter • One page standard business format • Email now more common and acceptable • Simple, focused, and personalized • Get addressee’s name and correct title • By-name referral known by addressee is better • Ask for an interview • Spellingand grammar count !
Resume key points • A resume is a facilitation tool • A great resume will not get you a job • A great resume may get you an interview • A bad resume could eliminate you as a candidate
Common faux paus • Unprofessional (e.g., lonelydude@email.com) • Employer or student email address or phone • Spellingand grammar (still) count ! • Difficulty following chronology of jobs • Format errors with successive jobs at one place • Delineating responsibilities and accomplishments • Failure to qualify and quantify accomplishments
Other considerations • Distinguish between cell and home numbers • Mind voicemail and “live” message takers • Career objectives or summaries • Too vague to be meaningful • Too specific, which may eliminate a candidate • Suggest using this format for your education • Bachelor of Science, Business Administration University College, San Antonio, Texas (Graduation anticipated May 2012)
Other considerations (cont.) • List and describe organizations for which you’ve worked in a sentence or two • Example: ACME Insurance Company is “a national provider of home and automobile insurance with 500 employees, 32 locations, and $10 million in annual net revenue.” • Gives reviewer sense of the type and scope of company
Other considerations (cont.) • Delineate responsibilities from accomplishments • Responsibilities – duties you perform or performed • Accomplishments – what you achieved (or will achieve) individually, part of a team, or larger organizational initiative • Include accomplishments and awards received (e.g., dean’s list) and professional affiliations last as a separate section
Other considerations (cont.) • Name and page number on every page (if you go beyond one page) • References • No need to list or put “provided upon request” • Don’t blind-side your references • Never lie or ‘fudge’ on your resume – it will come back to haunt you…
