  1. PERSUASIVE WRITING: SENTENCE STRUCTURE There are four major types of sentences: Simple Compound Complex Compound-complex.

  2. A simple sentence has the most basic elements that make it a sentence: a subject, a verb, and a completed thought. It can stand alone. • The Wiz was a movie made in 1978. A compound sentence refers to a sentence made up of two independent clauses (or complete sentences) connected to one another with a coordinating conjunction. • The Wiz was a movie made in 1978 and it starred Diana Ross. A complex sentence is made up of an independent clause and one or more dependent clauses connected to it. A dependent clause is similar to an independent clause, or complete sentence, but it does not make sense on its own.  • Although The Wiz starred Diana Ross, Michael Jackson stole the show in his role as the scarecrow. A compound-complex sentence is made from two independent clauses and one or more dependent clauses. • An adaptation of The Wizard of Oz, The Wiz premiered in 1978 and it starred Diana Ross and Michael Jackson.
