Seared Sensitivities Have we become callusedto sin? 1Timothy 4:2
As with most things, there are extremes- neither of which are good: • We can be “too sensitive” and be constantly looking for opportunities to be offended or hurt, 1Cor.13:5. • Or we can be so hard and callused as to be past feeling anything, Eph.4:19. One becomes “callused”(Grk. apalgeo; algeois tofeel pain- apalgeois tocease to feel pain) by repeated exposure to irritants.
As often happens, the spiritual correlates to the physical… • Christians can develop a spiritual callousness to wickedness. • It comes, as in the physical realm, by repeated exposure to irritants. • The irritant, in this case, is sin or wickedness. • By the constant bombardment of evil words, actions, or images, we can become numb to it all. But is this really a good thing???
Think about this: • Initially and ideally, evil (in any or all its forms) shocks our sensitivities. >We are disgusted by it. >We are upset and bothered by it. >We are “irritated”by it. • But by repeated exposure, we become accustomed to it- it no long bothers. -We no longer hear the words. -We don’t see the images. -We ignore the actions.
But that really a “good thing”? • Is it good to hear of perverted deeds and not be repulsed? • Is it good to see immorality and not be shocked? • Is it good to know about illicit sex, drug abuse, and all sorts of evil? • Consider these passages: +2Cor.1:12“not in fleshly wisdom” +Rom.16:19“innocent in what is evil” +Phil.4:8think onpure, lovely, etc.
Reality and the Bottom Line: • Certainly we live in a “wicked world” and we can’t always control our personal environments as much as we’d like, 1Cor.5:9-10. • And no one, even the Lord, is suggesting that you be naïve, Matt.10:16. • But, if we allow ourselves to become callused to sin and have our sensitivities to it seared past feeling by repeated exposure, it will eventually become part of “our” nature, Eph.2:3.
What the Lord wants and expects is a tender heart, Ephesians 4:32 which is not only repulsedby evil, but is willing toturn from it, James 1:27. How are your sensitivities? Have youbecome callused to sin?
