  3. Defining “Citizenship” • The Merriam-Webster online dictionary defines “Citizenship” as: • The status of being a citizen • (being in a community) • Membership in a community (as a college) • The quality of an individual’s response to membership in a community

Identifying “Good Citizenship” Being a citizen (entitled to rights and privileges) Being in a community, e.g., a university Maintaining qualifications for membership in that community Responding and behaving positively to meet standards of conduct for that community. • Ensuring that all citizens maintain their rights and privileges • Fulfilling well and positively the roles and responsibilities of being a citizen

Our Experience: Good Design isGood Citizenship • Communities of design and communities of learning: • Have norms and qualifications that aim high • Support members in positively fulfilling roles and responsibilities • Establish and maintain conduct standards • Examples from SPSU • Physical Design- Teaching architecture • Psychological Design- Principles of learning • Governance Design- Building community

Psychological Design Good Design Good Citizenship Articulate codes of conduct, e.g., citation of references Assess behavior with respect to those codes, e.g., use of appropriate reference citations • Provide guidance in what is to be learned, e.g., course outcomes • Provide feedback along the way, e.g., knowledge of results

Psychological Design Good Design Good Citizenship Aim to tap the intrinsic motivation in everyone Channel for good Drive out fear • Deming’s theory of Profound Knowledge- Knowledge of Psychology • Intrinsic Motivation- People want to do a good job and succeed • Management’s job is to tap this intrinsic motivation and “drive out fear.”
