Good Graphic Design Good graphic design • Says ONE thing • Has a THESIS statement
Why Good Graphic Design? • Allows quick information retrieval • Reinforces message • Is aesthetic
Type: Legibility • Refers to how easy it is to read • The typestyle picked must be legible Many typestyles are hard to read; avoid them like the plague • There must be enough contrast between color of type and background Yellow type on white paper does not work • Not all contrasting type/background color combinations work however
Type: Harmony • Refers to the fit of the type with the other elements in the layout • Unless contrast is intended, the typestyle must match and reinforce the other elements (type and art) and the message
Type: Communication • Refers to using type as illustration • Think of type as a visual element just like a photograph or an illustration and use it to reinforce the message
Vocabulary of Design • Point (real or imaginary): Attracts the eye • Line (real or imaginary): Shows direction and movement • Shape: Determines dimensions • Tone: Provides weight and meaning • Texture: Provides feel
Principles of Design • Balance • Proportion • Movement • Rhythm • Unity • Harmony • Contrast
