Search strategies • Need to consider exactly what information you are looking for
Search Strategies • Break it down to key concepts • Get correct spellings • Consider how words can be put together using BOOLEAN operators • AND, OR, NOT • BOOLEAN operators should be typed in ALL CAPS
Professional vs. personal • (~) tilde – indicates you are working with personal subdirectory and personal Webpage. Ex. http://www.people.virginia.edu/~sbk8q1>
Truncate the address • -delete a folder or section from the address • EX. • http://www.mskajder.com/romeo/lesson>
Search Engines • Searches its own internal database of Web sites, not every site on the Internet • Google uses a mathematical formula to rank a Web page based on the number of “important” pages that link to it.
Meta-searches • Provide a quick way to determine which engines best match students’ needs in terms of research. • Don’t crawl Web or maintain a database of Web pages. • Acts as middle agent, passing on a query to the major search engines and then returning the results. • EX. www.dogpile.com • www.c4.com • www.metacrawler.com • www.profusion.com
When using the Internet you need to be… • Capable of asking good questions about data in order to covert the data into information and eventually into insight. • Need to analyze information about authorship, content, navigability, point of view, purpose, and related links. • Slow down when online!!!
