  12. David Barrett on Good Missions Stewardship “Dollar for dollar and hour for hour, the harvest coming from the 10/40 Window nations outstrips that from the rest of the world 100 to 1,” Barrett says. “That is, if the same money and time spent to win one person to the Lord in the West were put to use in the 10/40 Window nations, the effort would yield a harvest of 100 souls added to the kingdom of God. It is 100 times more cost effective, therefore, to reach those in the 10/40 Window. But for a sizable number of ethnolinguistic groups, cost-effectiveness reaches 1000 times more than in Western countries.” World Christian Encyclopedia

  13. 10/40 Window • 4.2 billion (60%) of the world’s 7 billion people • 97% of the unreached nations • Only 8% of missionaries • Least evangelized megacities (population > 1 million) • 1.6 billion Muslims, 1 billion Hindus, 950 million nonreligious, and 560 million Buddhists (via Joshua Project) • More than 80% of the poorest of the poor • 85% of the world’s poorest nations • Spiritual darkness, evil strongholds • Less than 0.5% of churches’ budgets goes to reach the 10/40 Window http://nationsforjesus.org/locations/1040.php

  20. Hinduism is based on the concept ofreincarnation(Spirits return to earth many times in different forms trying to become one with Brahman). The soul moves up or down a hierarchy depending on their behavior in life. A person moves closer to Brahman by obeying the law of karma.Karmais the sum of all your deeds, good and bad. Good deeds involve following yourdharma, or duties dependent on your position, gender and occupation.

  21. Hinduism From India No single founder Holy Books: Four Vedas Brahman is the source of all divinity (holiness) Believe in reincarnation (soul is reborn many times based on Karma).

  22. Buddhism Grew out of Hinduism

  23. Buddhism is based on the Four Noble Truths. 3. The way to eliminate suffering is to eliminate desire 1. All life is suffering 2. Suffering is caused by desire for things that are illusions 4. Following the Eightfold path will help people to overcome desire • Four Noble Truths 1. Life means suffering 2. The origin of suffering is attachment 3. The cessation of suffering is attainable 4. The path to the cessation of suffering

  24. Teachings of the Buddha The Noble Eightfold Path • Right View • Right Intention • Right Speech • Right Action • Right Livelihood • Right Effort • Right Mindfulness • Right Concentration

  25. ISLAM

  26. ISLAM The Muslim name for God is Allah Muhammad was a camel driver from Saudi Arabia The Angel Gabriel gave Muhammad The Koran in the desert in the 7th Century. It is the Muslim holy book. He started his religion in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. This is the holiest city in Islam.

  27. Islamic Facts • Based on the teachings of the prophet Muhammad (born in Mecca) • Followers of Islam are known as Muslims • Two main divisions in Islam: Sunni & Shi’a • Muslims follow the Five Pillars • Scriptures called theQuran or Koran • The collection of Islamic laws is also known as theSharia

  28. Five Pillars of Islam • Declaration of faith in one God, Allah • Five times daily prayer toward Mecca • Giving alms / help for the poor • Fasting during the holy month of Ramadan • Pilgrimage to holy city of Mecca once during lifetime

  30. Always Enough, Heidi Baker

  31. Dependency Books • The Indigenous Church, Mel Hodges, AoG • We Are Not the Hero: A Missionary's Guide to Sharing Christ, Not a Culture of Dependency, Jean Johnson, former AGWM missionary • When Charity Destroys Dignity: Overcoming Unhealthy Dependency in the Christian Movement, Glenn Schwartz • Roots & Remedies: Of the Dependency Syndrome in World Missions, Robert Reese • When Helping Hurts: How to Alleviate Poverty Without Hurting the Poor . . . and Yourself, Steve Corbett • Toxic Charity: How Churches and Charities Hurt Those They Help (And How to Reverse It), Robert Lupton

  32. Avoiding Unhealthy Dependency • The road to dependency is paved with good intentions • Unhealthy dependency results from doing for people what they could do or should do for themselves • (If their dignity and initiative were respected, they could do things for themselves) • We might assume that people are poor because they appear to us to be poor • The assumption can drive the process • If you make people think they are poor, they may begin to believe you • Be careful not to assume that people have nothing to give back to God • Avoid dependency from the beginning • Day one affects day 100 From Glenn Schwartz

  33. Avoiding Unhealthy Dependency • In New Testament, money never goes from mother church to mission field • New Testament church planting did not depend upon money in the mother church • Westerners often use money to solve problems, even when money might not be the best solution • Goal – indigenous churches: 1) self-supporting, 2) self-governing, 3) self-propagating • The challenge is to learn how to help the poor without causing long-term dependency • Some people want to give money, but not themselves • “If Christians in Africa gave just 2% of their income, they could pay all their expenses.” Dr. David Barrett From Glenn Schwartz

  34. Avoiding Unhealthy Dependency • It is almost impossible for westerners to accept that our “compassion” might be at the root of the dependency problem • Westerners get a good feeling from helping others – even if, in the long run, the consequences are harmful • Short-term suggestions: • Everyone should go as learners, not as teachers • Never allow anyone on the team to be in charge on any part of the project • Don’t give the impression that your wealth is the key to solving every problem in another culture • What can Westerners do with their money? • Radio broadcasting (in unevangelized region) • Bible translation (since does not have a natural constituency) • Support missionaries • Be careful about helping where the church exists and should be standing on its own two feet From Glenn Schwartz

  35. Avoiding Unhealthy Dependency • Foreign funding can be like a poison or pollutant • Unhealthy dependency makes it nearly impossible for churches to send out their own missionaries • A characteristic of the dependency syndrome is that outsiders often cannot see the inconsistency of their actions • Do not do for others what they can and should do for themselves • Be cautious about child sponsorship programs (where there are extended families) • Be careful about providing scholarships for people to be trained outside of their cultural context • Avoid building church buildings for people who can build them for themselves (one of the biggest areas of abuse) • Let local builder directing building project From Glenn Schwartz

  36. Avoiding Unhealthy Dependency • Missionaries should not seek or accept a position or responsibility that could be filled by a local person • Missionaries should excuse themselves from business meetings whenever possible • The mission must die before the church can be born • Missionaries should avoid creating a personal agenda of things to be accomplished before leaving their assignment • True ownership occurs when local churches are free to make decisions on their own • Sometimes missionaries would do well to sit back and do nothing • Many short-termers have no idea of the impact that giving money can have on those they try to help • Short-termers often go where the gospel has been preached for decades (or more than a century) From Glenn Schwartz

  37. Avoiding Unhealthy Dependency • Well-intentioned efforts help to destroy local initiative • Those who are perpetuating dependency through their good intentions are most likely to get a good feeling from the contribution they are making • Beware subsidizing Bible prices overseas • Think sustainability! • Is it right to continue to send missionaries and funds to places where the gospel has been preached for a long time while others have not had the opportunity to hear it for the first time? From Glenn Schwartz

Participant’s Reader, p. 70

  43. Apostolic Passion (Homework) • http://www.evanwiggs.com/revival/passion/apospass.html • Those who have apostolic passion are planning to go, but willing to stay • If you will not suffer and sacrifice for something, you are not passionate about it • The greatest enemy of the ambition to see Jesus worshiped in the nations is lack of focus • The Church has an apostolic calling, an apostolic mission. God has called us to the nations. We must focus, or we won’t obey. • If you live without a vision of the glory of God filling the whole earth, you are in danger of serving your own dreams of greatness, as you wait to do “the next thing” God tells you • Only those who long to broadcast His glory to the nations have the right to stay • You even dare to believe you may be given the privilege of dying to spread His fame on the earth

  44. 4 Keys to Hearing God’s Voice • Habakkuk 2:1 – 2 • 1) Stillness • Quiet yourself so you can hear, still the mind • 2) Vision • Fix your eyes on Jesus • Look for vision as you pray • Use the eyes of your heart • 3) Spontaneity • Tune to flow • Recognize God’s voice as spontaneous thoughts (which light upon your mind) • 4) Journaling • Write down the flow of thoughts and pictures that come to you • Peace From Mark Virkler

  45. A Few Ways God Speaks • His word • Still small voice • (Faint) impressions • Other people • Prophecy • Dreams • Visions • Creation • Symbols, numbers, colors • Audible voice • Angels • Many other ways

  46. Calling / Destiny • Do you know your spiritual gifts? • Are you using them? • Do you know your calling? • Do you know where your gifting intersects with your passion? • What would you do if money was not an issue? • What would you do if you knew you could not fail? • Who are you serving? • How does the Lord want to work with you and through you to change the world? • We have access to the God of the Universe (inside of us)! • He can do everything good (in the Bible, including the ministry Jesus did) through us!

  47. Healing • If it is God’s will for some to remain sick for His glory, where is this class of people in the scripture? • Sickness is a curse (Dt 28:21, 22, 27, 28, 35, 59-61, Lev 26:16, 25) • The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. Jn 10:10 • The Lord may allow ‘enemies’ near us to teach us how to fight (Jdg 3:1, Ps 144;1) • Shalom; sozo • We can do all things through Christ; We have everything we need . . .; We will lay hands on the sick and they will recover; Jesus commanded us to heal the sick, cast out demons, and raise the dead • We have to learn how to cooperate with the Holy Spirit to do what the Father is doing See http://www.personal.psu.edu/jxp10/Gods_Will_to_Heal.html (Verses & Notes)

  48. Healing • What Jesus did is available to us (John 14:12, 20:21b) • Healing in O.T., but new covenant is superior • He took up our infirmities and carried our diseases. Mt 8:17 • Jesus showed us (the will of) the Father • How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him. Ac 10:38 • Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven • When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases, and he sent them out to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. Lk 9:1-2 • Instead of bringing scripture down to our level of experience, we need to bring our level of experience up to the level in God’s word. See http://www.personal.psu.edu/jxp10/Gods_Will_to_Heal.html (Verses & Notes)
