The classification of body shape is known as somatotyping. Three things are measured when somatotyping. Endomorphy (round), Mesomorphy (muscular) Ectomorphy (long and lean). Most people are a mixture of each type. Size and Shape
Size and Shape • Certain body shapes are more suited to certain activities. Ectomorph. • High jumpers are usually very tall and lean (thin). • Other ectomorph types are jockeys and long distance runners.
Size and Shape • High jumpers, jockeys and long distance runners tend to be this shape because they do not want to have to carry too much excess weight for any distance. Not exactly built for marathon running!
Size and Shape • Mesomorph. • Javelin throwers are usually very strong and muscular. • Other mesomorphs are weight lifters and sprinters.
Size and Shape • Endomorph. • Sumo wrestlers are an example of Endomorph sportsmen. Shot Putters could be a mixture of Meso-Endo.
