Survivorship 1/3/16
Do Now………….1/3/17 Happy New Year! Refer to the graph. 1.Which organism would you rather be? Why? Reference: p 111 http://www.ck12.org/biology/Population-Structure/lesson/Population-Structure-BIO/
To Do Objective: Students will use mathematical models to make predictions about population growth based on population pyramids and survivorship curves in an 82 minute block • Do Now Questions pre-assessment to hand in • Test completion/missing writing assignments (30 minutes) • Movie clips (5 mins.) • Survivorship assignment gathering of data (20-30 mins) Graph (20 mins). See Google Classroom for assignment sheet • Writing assignments will be a focus. Each month there will be major projects that require written explanations. • Exit card question (5-10)
Test completion Complete the timed writing assignment if you did not complete it for homework. It is due in 30 min. When you are done: Read page 111 Make notes on 3 types of population Survivorship curves Page 108: Age structure diagrams. Draw the 3 types of Age Structure Diagrams. Which of the populations shown in figure 6 is most likely to grow in size? Why?
Engage: Watch the video What type of survivorship curve is shown by the video? Refer to page 111 for the 3 types Opening: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HG3L98NFyro https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZ9nbv1VK0s (1:34-2:44)
Survivorship Gather data based on the age categories on your handout Send one member of your group to make notes on survivorship curves and population age/sex pyramids
Survivorship Graping A good graph: • Has a descriptive title • Has the independent variable on the x axis • Has the dependent variable on the y axis • Takes up ¾ of the paper • Has regular intervals labeled and units labeled
Graph analysis Questions "Questions: Write in full sentences. Write one paragrah to summarize what you did in this investigation… First, my group looked at the Star Ledger Obituaries Column to gather data about age of death. 1. Based on the graph you drew, what is the survivorship for a person aged 80-84? 2. What are the chances of survivorship for a person aged 10-14 according to this graph? 3. What are the three types of survivorship curves? What survivorship curve type does this most closely resemble?
Questions….continued 4. How might the graph change if more data was gathered from across the United States? 5. How might the survivorship graph change for a third world country? 6. Which age range shows the greatest decline in survivorship?
7. Compare the graph you drew to the type III survivorship curve? What similarities are there? What differences are there? Which organism would you rather be (an oyster or a human)? Why? 8. What other questions about survivorship could you study?
Exit Card • Which population is decreasing? • What is one achievement you are proud of from last year? • What is one goal you could set to be more successful this year? • What work are you missing? What is your plan to get this done? Monday: Quiz questions (5 multiple choice) and a timed writing assignment. Ex: analyze the age structure diagram. Next Friday: Survivorship graphing assignment is due (posted on Google Classroom)
