Historically Black Institution (HBI)Visitation Program Goals and Objectives • Goals of the Program • Encourage undergraduate students from historically black institutions to pursue a graduate education • Provide an overview of the educational opportunities available at Purdue • Establish ties between faculty and students at Purdue and at historically black colleges and universities • Increase minority enrollment at Purdue • Objectives • Increase the pool of potential graduate students through frequent contacts with historically black institutions • Ensure that students are financially able to attend by providing fellowships and tuition and fee scholarships • Enhance the experience of students after they enroll
Specific Activities of the HBI Visitation Program • A visit to Purdue by key administrators from historically black institutions • A three-day visit to Purdue by honors students selected by their universities for participation in the program • Visits by Purdue’s Director of the HBI program and the dean of the Graduate School to the participating colleges and universities to maintain contacts with faculty, administrators and students • Retention efforts to help new HBI students become acclimated and succeed at Purdue
Minority StudentRetention Activities • New Student Orientation Program • Welcoming Dinner for HBI and other ethnic students • Mentoring Activities • Meet individually with students • Formal mentoring groups being established • Intercede with faculty and administration on behalf of students • Graduation Recognition in the Spring • Maintain contact with HBI Alumni
