What is a First Vice President? The First Vice President is an elected officer of NCBW and is second in authority to the President. She has a very important role and should work very closely with the President and members of the executive committee and board to ensure effective leadership. First Vice Presidentof Programs
CHAPTER BYLAWS SHOULD INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING OR SIMILAR LANGUAGE DESCRIBING THE ROLE OF THE FIRST VICE PRESIDENT OF PROGRAMS: • preside and exercise the duties and powers of the President in the absence of the President; • know and understand the goals, objectives, Bylaws and policies and procedures of the Chapter and NCBW; • develop and coordinate all Chapter programs; • oversee the activities of all program committees; • ensure that the Chapter’s programs and goals are consistent with NCBW programs and goals; • serve as an ex-officio member of all committees that fall under her responsibility; and • represent the Chapter as required by the President. CHAPTER BYLAWS SHOULD INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING OR SIMILAR LANGUAGE DESCRIBING THE REQUIREMENTS FOR A CANDIDATE FOR THE OFFICE OF THE FIRST VICE PRESIDENT OF PROGRAMS: • served in at least one leadership position, i.e. committee chairperson, secretary, treasurer, etc.; • (b) attended at least one (1) National NCBW meeting; • (c) participated in the planning of at least one (1) Chapter event; and • (d) attended the Chapter’s leadership training. Some Critical Responsibilities for the 1st VP are: • Participates on the President’s team to create the organization’s overall vision, mission, values, beliefs and strategic goals. • Creates, communicates and implements the chapter’s vision, mission and overall direction within her area of responsibility which is programming. • Leads, guides, directs, and evaluates the work of the chapter to ensure its success in meeting their goals and advocacy mission . • Implements program initiatives that are consistent with national initiatives and conformed to meet the needs of the local community and constituents . Some Additional Critical Responsibilities for the 1st VP are: • Assist in the formulation of the strategic plan that guides the chapter’s direction; • Preside in the absence of the President in the sequence of their position, and shall perform the duties and exercise the powers of the President in the President’s absence; • Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the President and the board. First Vice Presidentof Programs • WORKING EFFECTIVELY WITH CHAPTER LEADERSHIP • Actively work with the board and leadership team on • the development of the chapter strategic plan • Reviews programming efforts and evaluation reports • Conducts regular meetings and conference calls to monitor • the progress of the committees under her area of responsibility • Conducts training sessions with committee chairs to ensure that their • program plans are on target s meet the Coalition goals • Serves as an ex-officio member of all chapter program committees

First Vice Presidentof Programs SUMMARY The national 1st VP of Programs and her committees work to develop programs that exemplify the core values and mission of NCBW. The chapter 1st VP of Programs must ensure that chapter programs are created and implemented to be transformative in the lives of the constituents in their communities and address local issues, concerns, and needs.
