Background • At the November IEEE 802 Plenary the 802.15 working chair requested that we have a discussion on our current coexistence process • A conference call was announced and then held on December 11, 2018. Minutes available in [1] • The 802.19 chair prepared an overview of the current IEEE 802 coexistence process [2] which was reviewed on the call • The 802.19 chair also presented [2] during the opening 802.19 WG meeting at the January wireless Interim • Notes from that discussion are available in the minutes [3] and summarized on the next slide Steve Shellhammer, Qualcomm
January Discussion Summary • Maybe “coexistence assurance” should be changed to “coexistence analysis” or “coexistence awareness.” This is to document the coexistence problem. • It would be better if the coexistence study could be done sooner, so that issues could be raised sooner, before the first draft of the standard. This might make it easier to address issues while the design of the standards is still in the early stages. • If after a preliminary study is complete, if there looks like there is “no solution” then maybe do not even do a CA document. • The CA document should include the Usage Cases and not “just the Physics” • This comes down to the position of the executive committee on coexistence. This should be discussed further by the EC. • In the rules, change “approved standards” to “active standards” Steve Shellhammer, Qualcomm
January DiscussionPossible Action Items from Discussion • The802.19 WG chair asked to people summarize the possible actions • Here are the three main actions suggested by the people participating in the January discussion, • Change “coexistence assurance” to either “coexistence analysis” or “coexistence awareness” to focus on the coexistence problem • Perform the analysis/study earlier in the process, well before first draft of the standard • Hold an EC discussion on this topic (possibly at a future EC workshop) Steve Shellhammer, Qualcomm
