Parody • Parody is a comedic device in which something is imitated in a funny way. • Parody alone does not have any deep meaning and is meant to simply make fun of what is being imitated. • It may take something serious and change it to make the content silly or ridiculous. • It may take stereotypes from the genre being parodied and use hyperbole to show how ridiculous they are.
Examples of Parody – Robin Hood • Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, was a huge box office success when it came out in 1991, ultimately becoming the second highest grossing film of the year.
Examples of Parody – Robin Hood • In 1993, Robin Hood: Men in Tights was released as a parody of the general Robin Hood story, with a specific focus on following the structure of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.

Satire • Satire is often confused with parody, because it uses many of the same devices (including parody, itself). • The major difference is that satire uses wit to ridicule vices, follies, abuses, and shortcomings of individuals, corporations, government, or society with the intention of shaming the target of the satire into improvement. • Satire often uses humour to offer a constructive social criticism.
Types of Satire • Straight-faced satire mimics a serious format (news coverage, journal articles, etc.), but the content is filled with irony, hyperbole, understatement, and other devices that criticise some aspect of the subject of the satire. • More light-hearted satires are designed to be funny first, with a serious after thought. The goal is it make people laugh, then to make them think.
Examples of Satire – Onion News Network • The Onion News Network is an organization that produces satirical news pieces, both broadcast and print. • It tackles a range of issues from racism and sexism, to the willingness of individuals to post personal details on the internet for just about anyone to see
