  2. Conjunctions • A conjunction connects words, phrases, clauses, and sentences. • The most common coordinating conjunctions are: and but or so

A simple sentence expresses only ONE complete thought. • For Example: • The puffins arrive at the beach. • A compound sentence is two or more independent clauses joined by a comma and coordinating conjunction. • For Example: • The puffins arrive at the beach, and the children cheer.   4. 2 independent clauses can be combined with a semi-colon instead of a comma and coordinating conjunction to make a compound sentence. • For Example: The puffins arrive at the beach; the children cheer.

  5. Discuss with a partner: Are the following sentences simple or compound? • Puffins are seabirds. • The pufflings peep for food. • The chicks try to fly, but some get stranded. • The cats may find them, or the children may find them first. • The beaks of the puffins are very colorful. • The puffins will come back, and build their nests.
