What are they? • “who” and “whoever” are subjective pronouns • “whose” is a possessive pronoun • “whom” and “whomever” are objective cases
Whovs. Whom • Use the he/him/his method to decide which word is correct • Ex: Who/ Whom wrote the letter? He wrote the letter. Therefore, the answer is Who • Ex: For who/ whom should I vote for? Should I vote for him? Therefore, the answer is whom
Whose? • Whose can be used for both singular and plural form • One can use the “his” method to decide whether or not to use whose. When answering the question if one uses “his” or “her” the correct answer is whose. • We use "whose" to determine possesion • **”whose” is not the same as “who’s”- “who’s” means who is. For example one would say: “Who’s at the door?” • Ex: Whose camera is this? • The camera is his. • Ex: She knew the family whose house we bought. • The family bought their house.
Whoever vs. Whomever • In order to decide whether or not to use “whoever” or “whomever” once again use the “he”/ “him” method • If you use “him” use “whomever” and if you use “he” use “whoever” • Never try to figure out which is correct by using the question. Always answer the question being asked. • Ex) I decided to vote for whoever/whomever called me first. • Who called first? He called first. Therefore, the answer iswhoever. 2 Ex) Ask whoever/whomever comes this way for directions. Ask him for directions. Therefore, the answer is whomever.
Just a few more tips • After a preposition or a prepositional phrase one must always use the objective (whom/ whomever). Ex) Give the package to (whoever/whomever)the group elected. • After verb to be must have subject pronoun (who/whoever). Ex) The parents of that baby (whoever/whomever) they are, shouldn’t leave it alone.
Final Assessment • (Who, Whom, whose) cell phone keeps ringing? • (Whoever, Whomever) parked this car needs to move it. • There is a fifty-dollar reward for (whoever, whomever) finds and returns my dog. • (Who, Whom, whose) is that man at the end of the alley? • He is the kind of person (who, whom, whose), my father says, will always be able to multiply his money.
