  1. North Attleboro High SchoolEnvironmental Science River Study Presented by Donna Cochrane NSTA National Convention March 27, 2008

  2. Research Design • Use Bridgewater State College’s Watershed Access Lab protocols • Testing is done for: • Depth and Flow (to determine volume of water) • pH, Temperature, Dissolved Oxygen (DO), % DO, Specific Conductivity • Nitrogen Nitrates (N-NO3) and Soluble Reactive Phosphorus (SRP) • Fecal Coliform and Macro-Invertebrates

  3. Massachusetts Class Standards for Warm Water • Students determine the parameters that the state uses for the river we are studying • For Example…on a Class B river… • Temperature shall not exceed 28.3°C • Dissolved Oxygen to be 5.0 mg/L or higher • Percentage of Dissolved Oxygen should not be lower than 60% • pH values to be between 6.5 and 8.3 • N-NO3 values are to be less than 1 mg/L (EPA) • SRP (Soluble Reactive Phosphorus) levels are to be under 0.1 mg/L (EPA) • Specific conductivity should not exceed 800 uS/cm (EPA) • Fecals should not exceed 200 Fecal Colonies per 100 mL

  4. Data Comparisons Students compare their data with State River Class requirements using Microsoft Excel for graphs.

  5. Watershed Maps

  6. Land Use Map • Picture of Land Use map made using ArcView software

  7. Color Orthographic Imagery • MassGIS data or Google Earth Cottage Street Cedar Street

  8. Bridges History of Surroundings • New bridges built • Neighbors fertilize yard before precipitation • Snowmelt/Salt • Channelization • Town water supply • Riparian zones cut down with Homeland Security Grant money • Dams – water releases • Waste Water Treatment Facilities

  9. Presentation Day

  10. School Liaisons • Administration – Department Head, Principal, and Assistant Superintendent • Technology Department • Faculty • Heritage Day at the Middle School

  11. Community Relationships • YMCA – loaned vans and adult driver • North Attleboro/Plainville Rotary presentations • North Attleboro DPW – Field Trips to Waste Water Treatment/Water Treatment Facilities • Pawtucket Water Board – permits monitoring of Class A river (Pawtucket, RI water supply) • Local Newspapers – The Sun Chronicle and Free Press…great press for students • EPA Speaker (Doug Heath) – discussed road salt and salinity

  12. Funding • YMCA grant for chest waders • North Attleboro/Plainville Rotary • North Attleboro Educational Foundation • North Attleboro School System

  13. Response to Course • Parents are happy that their children have the opportunity to take this course. • Students with an interest in fishing, animals, and the outdoors/camping are attracted to the course. • Students use the experience to pursue other avenues…for instance…
