  5. Common Core State Standards • English Language Arts and Math • The Common Core State Standards drive classroom instruction • The standard may be indicated on assignments that come home

  6. Reading • Curriculum – Reading Street • 90 Minute Literacy Block • Shared Reading – Whole group, discuss CCSS learning targets for the week • Guided Reading – Small group, differentiated instruction • Daily 5 Independent Literacy Activities: • Read to Self • Read to Someone • Work on Writing (Literacy Log) • Word Work (includes Spelling)

Finding a “Just Right” Book • The 5 Finger Rule • Put one finger up for every word you do not know on the page • 5 fingers up – Too Hard • 2-3 fingers up – “Just Right” • 0-1 fingers up – Too Easy • I PICK a “Just Right Book”: • P – Purpose: Why am I reading it? • I – Interest: Does it interest me? • C – Comprehend: Do I understand the story? • K – Know: Am I able to read MOST of the words?

  8. Spelling • Important Change: No pretest • Word list to study from on Reading Street Newsletter • Post Test on the last day of the week • 5 dictation sentences with 10 of 15 words embedded • Will come home after the weekend • Check results – Help child add missed words to back of Spelling Folder • Please initial and help child to remember to return the following day • Specific phonics target each week (CVC, CVCe, Consonant Blends, etc.)

Math • At-Home Math Practice • Fluency with sums 0 – 20, meaning able to recall and apply these facts • Look for XtraMath& TenMarks parent letters to come home – GREAT at home resource! • Curriculum - EnVision • Written specifically to address the Common Core State Standards • Many opportunities for differentiation and guided groups

  10. XtraMath • Quick MATH FACT practice that helps students focus on new facts and ones they struggle with – also allows for students to proceed onto subtraction, multiplication, and division when they are ready

Writing • Literacy Log • Choice Board • Using Bloom’s Taxonomy to demonstrate understanding of weekly stories • Six Traits • Ideas • Organization • Conventions • Sentence Fluency • Voice • Word Choice • Writing Journal • Weekly journals • Other topical journal entries • Monthly “formal journals” • Process Writing • Narrative • Explanatory/Informative • Argumentative (Opinion/Persuasive)
