  6. The Second Amendment • A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

  7. Some people believe gun control laws, which restrict gun ownership, can reduce bloodshed. But gun control has faced stiff opposition in the United States. • This opposition is led by the National Rifle Association (NRA) and the gun industry. Together, they form a powerful opposition to local, state, and national laws on gun control. • Over the years the federal government has enacted four major nationwide gun laws. • In 1934, it prohibited the possession of machine guns, sawed-off shotguns, and silencers. • The Gun Control Act of 1968 limited the importation and sale of cheap handguns, known as Saturday Night Specials, and prohibited the sale of handguns between states. • The Brady Bill, passed in 1993, required a five-day waiting period for all handgun purchases.

The 1994 crime control act banned for 10 years the manufacture and possession of 19 assault weapons and other semi-automatic guns that could fire many shots in succession. • This ban lasted until 2004. • Both supporters and opponents of gun control have used the wording of the Second Amendment to argue their respective cases. • Opponents of gun control argue that this amendment gives individuals the right to own firearms. • Supporters of gun control say it only gives states the right to keep armed citizen militias, not guns to individual citizens. • In a recent Supreme Court Case of 2010, McDonald v. Chicago, the court ruled that individuals have a right to possess a firearm for lawful purposes (in a 5-4 decision).

  11. Gun Control Skit • Around the room are posted various arguments in favor of and against gun control. • Walk around and view each argument. Afterward, pick the one that you support the most and stand by it. • Depending on who is standing by your station, you will team up to create a short skit that explores this argument. • Skits should have something thought-provoking to say about your argument, should involve all group members, and must be appropriate in content. • Take 15-20 minutes to prepare. Skits should be about a minute in length.
