What is a Haiku? • A Haiku is a poem that originated from Japanese culture. • Typically, haikus are written about nature, but they can be about everyday things, feelings, and experiences.
Structure & Rules • A Haiku is made up of 3 lines: • Line 1 must contain 5 syllables. • Line 2 must contain 7 syllables. • Line 3 must contain 5 syllables. • A Haiku does not have to rhyme.
Example #1 Pink cherry blossoms Cast shimmering reflections On seas of Japan
Example #2 Warm soup in a bowl Letters of the alphabet Hang on the teaspoon
Example #3 Curving up, then down Meeting blue sky and green earth Melding sun and rain
Directions: Write a haiku “love” poem about your favorite literary character. • Complete the “Brainstorming Chart” • Begin drafting your haiku • Create your valentine!
