  1. Eating Disorders People with extreme, unhealthy eating habits, often related to an obsession with weight or appearance

  2. Eating Disorders tend to show up for the first time during adolescence or young adulthood • Anorexia nervosa • Bulimia nervosa • Binge Eating Disorder

  3. Anorexia nervosa • An extreme fear of weight gain that leads people to starve themselves and exercise excessively; they see themselves as overweight even when they are extremely thin

  4. Bulimia nervosa • A condition in which people binge, or eat large amounts of food, and then purge, ridding their bodies of the food by vomiting or taking laxatives and diuretics • Emotionally people suffer with guilt and shame

  5. Binge Eating Disorder (BED) • People regularly go on eating binges, but without purging afterwards (secretly and destructively binge) • May lead to obesity

  6. Team of Health Professionals • Eating disorders can lead to serious health problems. • People with these disorders need help from a team of health professionals including: • medical doctors • mental health professionals • dietitians

  7. Eating Disorders are classified as Mental Illness • Self-image is false • It is often a matter of CONTROL • Constantly thinking of food • Low self-esteem and social problems • Adopting the ideal of some false “perfect” • False media images – unreasonable standards • Obsession with thinness • False thinking that “thin is healthy”

  8. Effects of Eating Disorders • Feeling more in control • Compliments and positive feedback for weight loss • Constant thoughts about food which block out other distressing thoughts • A way of asking for help • What seems like a solution to weight control • Eating to take your mind off other problems

  9. Underlying Health Problems • Nutrition deficiency • Reduced metabolic rate • Electrolyte imbalance

  10. Prevention • Children are nurtured and taught to respect themselves • Respect and value of your own uniqueness • Women finding honor and esteem in traditionally male fields, such as athletics, science, law and politics • Change media images from a false “perfect” as the ideal

  11. Electrolytes • Electrolytes are salts that conduct electricity and are found in the body fluid, tissue, and blood. Examples are chloride, calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium. Proper balance is essential for muscle coordination, heart function, fluid absorption and excretion, nerve function, and concentration. • Chronic laxative abuse or severe diarrhea or vomiting can lead to electrolyte disturbances along with dehydration. People suffering from bulimia or anorexia are at especially high risk for an electrolyte imbalance.

  12. . Karen Carpenter Went on a water diet to lose weight and, as she put it, to appear more attractive. Continued to diet even after losing 20 lbs, until her death at the age of 32. She died of cardiac arrest due to anorexia and weighed only 80 lbs.

  13. . Mary Kate Olsen Olsen checked into an eating disorder treatment center and underwent treatment for anorexia after months of speculation and rumors about her thin appearance and denying of being anorexic. Mary-Kate celebrated beating her eating disorder by giving away clothes that no longer fit her.

  14. Nicole Richie Never admitted to having an eating disorder but suffered from a broken heart after her engagement to DJ AM was called off, which she blamed for her emaciated figure.

  15. Wynonna Judd Struggled with emotional eating and is on her journey towards healthy eating. “It's not about size, I'll let that take care of itself. The work I'm doing is inside.”

  16. CalistaFlockheart Actress CalistaFlockhart admitted after years of being in denial that she struggled with anorexia while filming the TV show 'Ally Mc Beal'. “I started under-eating, over-exercising, pushing myself too hard and brutalizing my immune system.”
