Statement of the Problem • 42% of eighth graders in US read at their basic level, meanwhile, 26% read below their basic level. • 162 000 struggling readers in Malaysian schools. • Researcher observe characteristics of struggling readers among students at her institution. • There is a need to remedy such situation. • Studies on the use of pictures • ‘A picture is worth a thousand word’
Purposes of the Study • To investigate the effect of using pictures on comprehension of poetic text among Form One struggling readers in ESL classroom. • To examine the type of pictures effective for comprehension of poetic text and its characteristics of effectiveness with regards to struggling readers.
Research Questions • Does use of pictures affects struggling readers’ comprehension of poetic text? • What type of picture is more effective for struggling readers to understand poetic text, static or animated pictures? • What are the characteristics of pictures that are effective in aiding comprehension of poetic text for struggling readers?
Limitations of the Study • Limited in terms of the location and sample size • Location = a school in BatuPahat, Johor • Purposive sampling, a small sample size • Findings cannot be generalized • A case study • Reliability of the results (test-retest) • Set up a control group
