Presentation Overview • Site Description • Data • Vehicle • Bike & Ped • Non-Compliance • Recommendations • Conclusions Photo courtesy of bikeportland.org
Site Description NE Broadway and Williams
Previous Site Design • Bike lane is in between two turn lanes • Cyclists have to use the signals intended for vehicles • Vehicles in the second turn lane have to yield to cyclists
Site View Looking north on Williams Looking west on Broadway
Cycle Length 33 15
Findings • Vehicle count and noncompliance • Bike & Ped count and non-compliance
Vehicle Counts & Non-compliance Peak Hour Periods on Thursday, February 10th
Non-compliance West-North Car Over Stop Bar (C)
Recommendations • Lane Direction Change • Signal Timing • Wayfinding & Marking
Proposed Solution Show Before and After of Intersection
Signal Timing • Bicycles can retain inertia • However… • ~20% bike signal randomly triggered • Recalibration needed
AM Issues and Recommendations • Longer Westbound green time recommended to increase flow
PM Issues and Recommendations • High congestion for I-5 South • Queue bleeds to Broadway/Williams • Network analysis necessary to make recommendations
PM Issues and Recommendations • Large N-bound bike traffic • Weidler/Williams study needed • Incorporating elevation change for cyclists?
Wayfinding and Marking • Intersection direction confusing • Needs for lane indication • Far from intersection • Close to intersection • Directional signs needed at intersection
Conclusions • Difference in directional vehicle and bicycle traffic for AM & PM periods • Efficiency improvements available • Large non-compliance with right turn only lane during PM peak period • Improvements for cyclist safety and comfort
