  3. THIAGO DE MORAES GONZAGA FOUNDATION History It was in May of 1977 that my son Thiago was born. But it was also in a cold early morning in May, the 20th of 1995 that I held the body of my beloved son in my arms, a week after he turned eighteen. Thiago went for a ride from which he would never come back again. My scream couldn’t just be stuck in my throat. I didn’t know how far I could get: if I would reach my neighborhood, my city, or even my country. What I knew was that I had to do something in order to avoid that other parents would pass through the same as I did and that other youngsters have to day. And today I’m here, in a Global Meeting, sharing with you our experience with the program VIDA URGENTE (Urgent Life)

  4. May, the 20th of 1996 Program VIDA URGENTE’s Launch

  5. 1ST ACT: A DOCUMENT WITH MORE THAN 30 THOUSAND SIGNATURES, ASKING FOR THE APPROVAL OF THE “NEW BRAZILIAN TRAFFIC CODE” OF WHICH THE SENAT HADN’T TAKEN NOTICE FOR A LONG TIME The code, approved in 1997, came into force in 1998. This was our first success, that was supported by governors, artists, delegates, students and the population in general.

  6. MADRUGADA VIVA (ALIVE DAWN) - 1ST ACTION The “Madrugada Viva” consists in a group of Young volunteers that goes to the main night spots: bars, clubs, gas station convenience stores, etc., to talk and make people aware of the danger of drinking and driving. This action was often in the media.

  7. LAW NUMBER 9.996 FROM THIS ACTION THE LAW Nº 9.996 AROSE ON JUNE, THE 19TH OF 2006: -The consumption of alcoholic beverage in gas stations, parking lots and similar places in the city is not allowed, obligates them to show to the public posters in visible placescontaining the number of this law and the words “The consumption of alcoholic drinks is forbidden”. This law was proposed by the foundation first to the city of Porto Alegre and today it’s force in hundreds of Brazilian cities.

  8. LAW Nº 11.705, JUNE THE 19TH OF 2008 During the National Traffic Week of 2007 (18 to 25, September), the Thiago de Moraes Gonzaga Foundation delivered to the Justice Minister, Tarso Genro a document with more than 70’000 signatures, requiring the prohibition of alcoholic drinks in all commercial establishments placed on Brazilian roads. this law led to the approval of the Zero Tolerance Law in the Brazilian traffic, in force since June of 2008.

  9. LAW Nº 11.705, JUNE THE 19TH OF 2008 On June, the 19th of 2008 the law number 11.705 was approved by the National Congress. We from the Thiago Gonzaga Foundation often call it “Life Law”. 30% less people were hospitalized and the number of fatal accidents was reduced by 40% in Brazilian traffic during the first 30 days of application.

  10. SUPPORT ACT TO THE “LIFE LAW” The Thiago de Moraes Gonzaga Foundation realized this support act for the life law in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Porto Alegre, in association with the Rio Grande do Sul Medical Union, counting on the presence of the Minister of Justice.
