Post War Issues • Inflation • Sudden increase in prices of goods • New work force • Returning soldiers needed jobs • GI Bill of Rights • Congress authorized billions of dollars for benefits for veterans • Used for college, medical treatment, and home and business loans • Helped the economy and changed make up of America • Truman’s Fair Deal • Americans expect “fair deal” from government

Economic Changes of the 1950’s 1950’s brought new approaches, new ideas, and new problems Changes to production • Nuclear power became important energy source • materials, technology, and corporate structure led to more production Growth Output • Directed towards products to be used at home ex. tv’s & refrigerators • military spending to keep up with Soviets • Production on the international level Problems • Waste disposal • Air and water pollution • Depleting resources

Suburban America • Interstate Highway Act • Growth of highways changed the way Americans lived • Allowed movement of homes away from inner cities • Baby Boom • Return of servicemen encouraged couples to have families • Beginning in late 40’s significant increase in the birth rate led some to name this the Baby Boom era • Consumerism • Increase in jobs, college education, and salaries led to more Americans having more money • Items they couldn’t afford they now could
