Lewis Structures For Covalent Molecules Std 2 Atoms Valence Electrons Lewis Structure H2O O O H2 formula H H Total bonding Unshared A bonding pair of electrons = Check 2 things to have a correct Lewis Structure 1. Every atoms has 8 electrons except H (only needs 2) 2. Total electrons in Lewis Structure = total of all valence electrons from the individual atoms.

This is how we get more than one bond - WE ARE OUT OF ELECTRONS 1. basic layout 2. put in bonding electrons Total valence electrons Subtract bonding electrons total left for the rest of the Lewis Structure 3. add in leftovers Not enough to go around N doesn't have 8 1. H has 2, C has 8, N has 8 4. Start Sharing Total electrons = 8 5. more sharing N still doesn't have enough electrons
