Email: How it works? • To send an email you need an email Software or Web Based email • To send an email to a friend you need to know their email Address • You have to specify an appropriate email address • Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) is the standard for email transmission across the Internet. • SMTP is a protocol for sending e-mail messages between servers
Email Usage • Send emails using the fields: To, CC & BCC • TO: Send the message to the selected person. • CC: Send a Carbon Copy of the message to the selected person. • BCC: Send the message to the selected person as a Blind Carbon Copy. A blind carbon copy is a copy of the message that is sent to someone in secret, other recipients of the message will not know that the selected person has received the message.
Email Usage • Reply, Reply to all, Forward • Reply with or without original message insertion. • Attach files (all kind of files) • Organizing Mail Folder • Create a new Folder • Move Mails to new folder • Delete Mail • Sort messages by Sender (name), by subject, & by date etc. • Send your e-mail to a Mailing List • Encryption or coding: think about encrypting your email
You Got Mail! Just be careful • VIRUS: Usually comes in the form of attachment, can destroy all the files on your computer if double-clicked • => Install anti-virus program • => Back-up your vital information • DO not open (double click) on files that the sender is unknown. • SPAM: Very annoying email that targets specific groups, e.g., real estate buyers • HOAXA bad joke from someone, and usually is not harmful • Make sure not to forward a chain email (a Hoax) to people you know. • SCAM or FRAUD: Beware! You can lose money if you do not exercise caution. The most notorious is the Nigerian scam urging people to open a bank account and deposit some money, which is later withdrawn without their consent
