Rowland Unified School DistrictGATE Program overview • Products – each year GATE students are required to complete three different culminating products in three different curricular areas. • products are not additional assignment, but rather of different expectation levels • products include higher levels of thinking, complexity and quality • products are the result of teacher and student discussions and a GATE contract agreed upon by the student, parent and teacher • Products can be completed within the classroom or during after school special interest activities • GATE contract.doc
Hollingworth GATE program includes: • Clustering of students – students are grouped in designated GATE classrooms.
Differentiated instruction – teachers meet student needs and challenge students to higher expectations. • After School Activities –special interest workshops on enrichment in math or fine arts, usually 6-8 weeks or once per trimester, one hour per week.
GATE Identification • Hollingworth School follows the guidelines provided by the Rowland Unified School District. • Identification takes place in March for participation in the GATE program the following year. • These guidelines include: • Teacher referral and GATE Characteristic Checklist • California Standards Test (CST) scores in Reading and Math for previous year and current year • Rubric scoring on a classroom product of high quality • Group testing on OLSAT test and NNAT for English Learners • Students and Parents are notified of the results of the identification process after current CST scores are available
GATE parent involvement: • Receive written communication of upcoming activities • Participate in formal and informal parent conferences • Attend annual GATE parent meeting • Receive notice of results of GATE Identification process • Participate in GATE Parent Survey
GATE students participate in: • School-wide leadership opportunities through Hollingworth Student Council • Enrichment activities like violins, band, music and sports • Special projects and activities • District GATE activities
TentativeHollingworth’s after school enrichment sessions include: • Chess Club – students are able to learn to play or improve their skills • Technology – learn to create a powerpoint presentation • Visual Art – study various art masters, research style and create products to represent that artist’s style.
