March 5, 1770 in Boston • Not really a “massacre.” Only 5 men died. • Paul Revere made an engraving depicting the British firing on a crowd of unresisting civilians. • Thomas Hutchinson, the current governor at the time, ordered British troops out of Boston and arrested the soldiers. • The British soldiers who were arrested were accused of murder and tried in court, defended by radicals Samuel Adams and Josiah Quincy Jr. Facts

The Boston Massacre was used as propaganda for anti-British campaigns • It inflamed anti-British feeling • Parliament repealed the Townshend Acts (except Tea Act) the same day, halting American resistance. • The Boston Massacre wasn’t the spark of the Revolutionary war, but it was a step towards the war.
