Service Obligation • All scholars receiving support through this project must satisfy the service obligation requirement in 34 CFR Part 30 • This requires 2 years of work for every year of scholarship support • However, this Service Obligation • Does not create an incentive for scholars to obtain employment in postsecondary institutions • May indirectly be deterring doctoral-level graduates from seeking and obtaining employment as higher education faculty in postsecondary institutions with low incidence training programs

Service Obligation • As such, • the Secretary has determined that scholars who complete doctoral-level degrees under this project [NLCSD] and go on to obtain employment as higher education faculty at postsecondary institutions in the area for which they received training will only be required to • complete 1 year of work for every year of scholarship support instead of 2 years of work for every year of scholarship support.
