Moving into Key Stage 2 • Your child is now entering Key Stage 2. • The launch of Curriculum 08 means a move towards a skills based curriculum. • The curriculum is organised through thematic based work, using a skills continuum.
Topics • Autumn Term – Chocolate • Spring Term – Conservation – our locality • Summer – Romans
The Autumn Term • The children will study chocolate and discuss philosophical questions. • They will carry out persuasive writing about chocolate. • Science will be an integral part of our topic linked to chocolate and healthy eating. • They will create posters/leaflets using i-pads.
The Spring Term • This term will focus on Conservation • We will be looking at our locality – reduce/reuse and recycling of materials to protect our environment.
The Summer Term • Look at life in Roman times. Visit castles in the locality.
Philosophy Frog and Pupil of the week. • Each week a child will be selected to become ‘pupil of the week’. • They will also bring home a philosophical question to discuss.
Reading • Reading activities take place most afternoons. • Children work in groups of 6. Activities are: • group reading using a shared text or Big Book with the class teacher • individual reading • group task, based on work from the group reading session • Playing language games. • There is a timetable for each activity.
Group reading • Emphasis is now on reading for meaning • Children will be taught about a range of punctuation • They will be encouraged to use a range of strategies to identify unknown words • They will be encouraged to discuss plot and characters
Group reading cont… • They will predict and retell the story • They are encouraged to read with expression and intonation • Their fluency will develop as their confidence rises • The children are grouped by ability to ensure they are studying a suitable text
Reading at home • Please can you listen to your child read on a regular basis and then write in their Home/School Links Books. • This enables us to see the types of books they are reading at home and how their fluency is developing with you. • Please can you encourage your child to change their book on a regular basis once completed.
P.E / Games • Swimming will be on Monday – split into 5/6 weeks sessions per class. • Games will be on Friday afternoons. • The children will need dark joggers, trainers, a white T Shirt and a warm jumper for working outside.
P.E • Indoor P.E. is on Wednesday and the lesson will be lead by the class teacher. • The children should be barefoot and will need to wear black shorts and a white T-shirt.
Visits • There has already been a visit to Cadbury World. • Spring and Summer terms- still to be arranged.
Spellings • The children are being taught spellings through focused weekly activities, which will incorporate multi sensory strategies. • Words for tests are brought home on a Wednesday. • When your child has spellings to learn please will you practise the spelling pattern with them as well as learning the words off by heart. • Weekly spelling tests are on a Wednesday morning.
BLP • Building Learning Power • An approach to learning developed through the curriculum. • Teaches the children strategies to help their learning.
Mathematics and Times Tables • Mathematics is taught every day in ability groups. There will be three classes of approximately 20 children. • Your child will be tested weekly on times tables, beginning with the 2 x tables • Please help your child learn times tables. House keeping • The children will be required to bring a labelled water bottle into school which they will need to take home regularly for washing. • If your child is unwell please telephone the school on the day they are absent so that the registers can be marked accordingly.
